About Little Bay / Chifley

  • Postcode: 2036
  • Population: 6084
  • Municipality: City of Randwick
The Little Bay & Chifley area has changed considerably over the past 10 to 15 years; it was a scrubland connected to the south eastern headland, with the only distinguishing landmarks being the Prince Henry Hospital (heritage listed) and The Coastal Golf Club.

Now the suburbs locales are populated with state of the art ultra modern apartment complexes, town houses and luxurious family homes. With its own village style commercial hub, water views and still a reasonable proximity to the CBD the once untouched land is now a hot spot for singles and families alike. On the outskirts of the locales you can find older freestanding houses and scattered apartment blocks and a number of executive apartments still in development.

History
The Little Bay area was first used as a makeshift camp during Sydney's smallpox outbreak in 1881-82, to isolate sufferers of the disease. At first, a "tent city" was established, but further smallpox outbreaks and a typhoid epidemic convinced the government to build a permanent hospital there to treat infectious diseases.

Little Bay was an ideal location because it was isolated from settlements but still close enough to Sydney. The Coast Hospital was particularly valuable during the bubonic plague in Sydney of 1900 and then again when soldiers returning from Europe brought the influenza virus back in 1919.
The Coast Hospital became Prince Henry Hospital in 1934. In 2001 services were transferred to Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney and the hospital site became available for residential use.
